Greencastle-Antrim girls basketball cruises past Biglerville

So much for a letdown.

Following a marathon weekend at the Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament, the Greencastle-Antrim girls varsity basketball team took to the road again on Monday, traveling to Biglerville for a non-divisional contest.

Despite playing their third game in four days, the Blue Devils were up to the task, proving too much for a young Biglerville team en route to a 45-27 victory.

“Our girls were just ready to play tonight,” G-A head coach Mike Rhine said. “Which was nice to see after the way we battled on Saturday.”

After defeating James Buchanan on Friday night, the Blue Devils squared off against Chambersburg in Saturday’s Tip-Off championship. Although forcing overtime with the Trojans, G-A ultimately fell short 46-41.

On Monday, there was no evidence of a hangover.

By the end of three quarters, the Blue Devils had opened up a 36-9 lead, putting it on cruise control through the final frame. Tache Smothers and Lauren Grove headlined the scoring list with nine different girls contributing to the winning effort.

Smothers was sensational at the point, netting a team-high 14 points to go along with six steals. Grove also reached double figures, finishing with 11 while Rachel Kline owned the paint, recording a game-high 15 rebounds.

“Tache was just athletically superior tonight,” Rhine said. “She was too quick and they really didn’t have anyone that could guard her. When they shot, Rachel rebounded, and when we got out in transition, everything flowed smoothly.”

Chloe Hoover added five points for the Blue Devils followed by four from Miranda Sharp. Brooke Strait ended with three points while Cassey Cordell, Jenna Crunkleton, Malaya Maloy and Kline each netted a basket.

“They (Biglerville) are a young team that is well coached, but our girls were just too much for them tonight,” Rhine explained. “Hopefully that will continue tomorrow.”

The early season stretch doesn’t get any easier for the Blue Devils, as they are back in action again tonight, opening Mid-Penn Colonial Division play on the road at Northern York.

G-A also won Monday’s junior varsity game 52-27. Jane Herman paced the Blue Devils with 16 points.
